lindsey graham still doesn't know enough about benghazi and he is not going to let chuck hagel go forward unless we find out some more. >> i don't think we should allow brennan to go forward for the cia directorship, hagel to be confirmed to secretary of defense until the white house gives us an accounting. >> bill: i want more -- so he says he wants to know what now, by the way, remember lindsey graham started out by saying, i am not going to -- we are not going to move forward with hagle unless we get the secretary, of state, herself to testify on benghazi. she did. so then, he said, no, we are not going to move forward unless we get leon panetta to come forward. so did john brennan and they have had three freakin hearings on the senate. what more do they want? now lindsey graham says, i want to know minute by minute everything that president obama did the night of the benghazi attack, you know, which is absurd. congress cannot make a demand like that. by the way, maybe they should give us minute by minute what george bush did after the septembe

conference on benghazi. mccain was addressing the republican tactic of filibustering the hagel confirmation to get more answers on benghazi. >> this are other questions that need to be answered, and we feel that the intervening week and a half almost is sufficient time to get those questions answered. >> so from that comment right there to "meet the press", something must have happened, because mccain wasn't talking about a massive cover-up there. in fact, he seems confident that the questions will get answered. even in his interview with david gregory yesterday, mccain admitted the filibuster of hagel would end. >> but he will be confirmed. and we will have a vote when we get back. and i'm confident that senator hagel will probably have the votes necessary to be confirmed as the secretary of defense. >> round and round and -- it just doesn't seem to add up, does it? if mccain is filibustering hague toll get answers on benghazi, and if mccain claims there is a massive cover-up, then why would mccain allow the hagel vote to move forward after a week and a half? well, time's up. clock hit rig
's new concerted effort to make president obama withdraw the nomination of chuck hagel to be the next defense secretary. 15 republican senators signed a letter arguing it would be, quote, unprecedented, unprecedented for a secretary of defense to take office without a broad base of bipartisan support. let's bring in dana bash. she's working this story for us. the critics of chuck hagel, and there are many, they are not giving up? >> they are not. and that's really what this is about. this is about hagel's harshest critics to say that they are not happy. it's a big deal. they are saying, mr. president, please withdraw it. if you look at these faces, they are the most conservative members of the senate so it isn't surprising that they would be this aggressive on what has really become a partisan issue and they know what that what has happened in this recess -- the senate is in recession -- is that some of their fellow republicans have come out and said, we will allow this to go forward. so they know it's not technically going to be possible for them to stop it but the votes, they though

been writing about chuck hagel and the attacks on chuck hagel. you can disagree with any nominee of the president, but the chuck hagel stuff ended up going over the line don't you think? >> yeah, in a big way. i did write last week that i wonder if he's worth all of this trouble, because the only utility of a republican defense secretary for a democratic president is to make the republicans in the senate and -- and the congress -- but particularly the senate go along with stuff like budget cuts, but if hagel has lost that utility, then what good is he? however, since then, bill they have gone a little nut-so and they are doing this stuff that prove that you didn't take money from these people and this right-wing website that i don't even want to name prove that you didn't say what we heard you might have said in a speech in 2010 -- >> bill: and he was taking money from terrorists -- >> yeah and all of these people. so now this is turning into a quasi -- >> bill: but the flip side is all of these republicans are going to need stuff from chuck hagel. >> o
